Understanding Your Cycle
A typical cycle is 28 days, but ranges from 21–35 days are normal. The key to conception is understanding your personal ovulation window.
The Four Phases
Menstrual Phase (Days 1–5)
Period begins. FSH rises slightly to stimulate follicle growth. Rest and iron-rich food are important.
Follicular Phase (Days 6–13)
Estrogen rises, uterine lining thickens. Energy and mood typically improve. Ovulation is approaching.
Ovulation (Day 14 ±2)
Egg is released. This is your peak fertility window, up to 24 hours for the egg and 3–5 days for sperm. LH surge happens just before.
Luteal Phase (Days 15–28)
Progesterone rises to prepare for implantation. If no fertilisation, levels drop and menstruation begins again.
Fertility Optimisation Tips
Track your cycle for 3+ months to understand your personal ovulation timing.
Basal body temperature rises ~0.2°C after ovulation, tracking it helps confirm timing.
LH ovulation predictor kits detect the surge 24–36 hours before ovulation.
Folate (leafy greens, lentils) and zinc (seeds, nuts) support egg quality.
Moderate exercise improves fertility; excessive intense workouts can disrupt ovulation.
Poor sleep disrupts reproductive hormones, aim for 7–8 hours consistently.
Smoking reduces ovarian reserve. Even passive smoking affects egg quality.
Both underweight and overweight conditions affect hormone balance and ovulation.
